‘I used an Oodie to cut my heating bills’ – Oodie Black Friday sale offers up to 50% off

With autumn well on the way homes up and down the country are having the same debate – is it time to turn the heating on? Even with the recent cold snap, so far we have been able to avoid pressing the button in our house, and in part this is thanks to one of my best ever winter buys, an Oodie.
When I bought my Oodie, in 2022 when they were very much the new thing. Coming off the back of Covid there seemed to be a real interest in loungewear which, paired with the cost of living crisis and rising energy bills (I guess some things never change) these huge fleecy hooded blankets came with a premium price tag that meant, when I ordered my first – that’s right, I’m such an Oodie superfan now that I have several – I paid $114 less a small discount for signing up to the brand’s newsletter.
At the time I was a bit worried that something I was only wearing around the house couldn’t be worth that kind of money, but more than two years on it’s paid for itself time over in terms of money saved not turning the heating on while working from home. What’s more Oodie has unveiled a massive Black Friday sale that would have me seriously considering buying a replacement if mine still didn’t look great despite being washed and worn regularly over the years.
Just in case you’re one of the few people who’s not familiar with the loungewear icon, which has become beloved across social media and popular with all ages, the must-have product is basically a thick, fleecy blanket with arms, a hood (obviously, hence the name) and a large pocket on the front. This pocket is both perfect for carrying everything you need round the house or to put your hands in to ensure you’re totally cozy when the temperature drops.
Over the years the brand has branched out into outdoor jackets, shoes, and even Original. However, their bestseller remains the Original and is regularly refreshed with different colors and prints this year alone we’ve seen everything from Snoopy to Grinch, Pokémon to children.
The Oodie is deliberately, cozily, oversized and comes in adult sizes as well as smaller versions for children and even dogs. While you’d imagine having just one large version for all shapes and sizes would make The Oodie cumbersome and you’d end up constantly pulling it up off your shoulders, clever touches like the elasticated cuffs means that it stays comfortable and where it should without causing any problems.
When I bought mine it wasn’t a snap purchase and I spent a lot of time researching dupes and similar products before taking the plunge. In the end, what made me choose the premium product – and rest assured, The Oodie is premium and therefore is one of the pricier of these kind of blankets – was the fact many reviews mentioned the amazing plushness and fluffiness of the fleece of the blanket.
I also liked that its measurements came up longer than a lot of similar products, meaning it would be calf length on me rather than thigh or knee length. When it arrived, in a cute storage bag and tied with a bow, I was surprised to feel how luxuriously plush it looked, even compared to the pictures.
When I put The Oodie on I very quickly noticed the difference in how warm I felt. Even sitting at the laptop without moving for an hour or two at a time, when I’d normally suddenly feel really cold and have to stand up and make a brew, instead I was getting up to stretch my legs rather than because I couldn’t feel them anymore.
Of course, the fact that when I do get up to go to make a hot drink nowadays I can put my hood up and practice my best Princess Leia talking to R2D2 ‘help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope’ impression is a secret firmly kept between me and my kettle. Let’s pretend over the years the novelty has worn off (it hasn’t).
As someone who works from home a lot while everyone else is out of the house, Oodie really helped cut the amount the heating is on during the day although it’s also perfect to snuggle up with watching TV of an evening. I even chose a deliberately understated navy style so that, at a push, I could get away with it in work team video calls. I don’t know if it’s just my colleagues were particularly polite or didn’t notice, but it did the job – although when we bought the children their own versions we did go for more fun colorful prints – and my son’s favorite remains his Christmas-themed Mickey Mouse one, which is resolutely worn year round.
What’s more, coming into its third winter I am thrilled at how soft and thick my original Oodie still is even with my slightly dodgy reputation for making things lose their fluffiness in the washing machine. The only issue with washing it is that it’s so thick drying it in winter can take a while unless you have a dehumidifier, or a spare to wear while it dries.
When writing reviews we’re always asked would we spend the money and buy the product ourselves. Not only did I do that in the first place, but I’d happily do so again, especially with Black Friday and Christmas sale season bringing plenty of opportunities for savings.
The brand’s Black Friday deals are some of the best we’ve already seen and means everything on the site not just the Oodies but shoes, pants, socks, poncho towels, and even mini Oodies for dogs as well as designs devoted to Pokémon, Snoopy, Stranger Things and Grinch are all discounted.
Walmart is also offering Black Friday savings you can snag right now. You can shop this Dreo Portable Space Heater for $39.99, originally $89.99, as well as this Keurig Single-Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker for almost 50% off.
